Who we are

The South Carolina African-American Tourism Council

The South Carolina African-American Tourism Council (SCAATC) is dedicated to elevating African-American tourism as a cornerstone of economic growth and cultural pride in South Carolina.

African-American tourism is a powerful driver of South Carolina’s economy, contributing $2.4 billion annually and supporting over 26,000 jobs. With African−American travelers spending an average of $402 per person, this vibrant sector not only boosts local businesses but also preserves cultural heritage.

To fully harness the potential of African-American tourism in South Carolina, targeted promotion and product development are essential. With 55% of African-American visitors unaware of cultural attractions, there’s a clear need for strategic marketing campaigns and enhanced visitor experiences. Investing in initiatives like the Gullah Geechee Corridor and creating interactive tools for businesses can attract more travelers, boost local economies, and preserve cultural heritage. By prioritizing these efforts, South Carolina can position itself as a premier destination for African-American tourism.

Collaboration is key to unlocking the full potential of African-American tourism in South Carolina. By uniting local governments, businesses, nonprofits, and cultural organizations, we can create a cohesive strategy to promote heritage sites, support Black-owned businesses, and develop engaging visitor experiences. Together, we can amplify awareness, drive economic growth, and ensure that African-American history and culture are celebrated and preserved for future generations. Let’s work hand in hand to make South Carolina a leading destination for inclusive tourism.
